Will Knull have a big role in Venom 3? Here's what reports have to say
Venom: The Last Dance is just around the corner, and with it comes the long-awaited debut of a truly horrifying deity. Yes, "god is coming" indeed. Since his introduction in Donny Cates' Venom (2018), Knull quickly positioned himself as one of Marvel's most powerful villains, taking down a Celestial on his own and ripping Sentry in half with his bare hands. But beyond his physical prowess, one of the key aspects of the character is his rich backstory.
The King in Black has existed before the creation of the Marvel Universe itself. As such, he's lived through countless events and has a big mythology behind him - even facing the God of Thunder during the Middle Ages. Furthermore, Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the X-Men joined forces to fight Knull's army when he finally arrived in our world. So with all that in mind, many fans have wondered what kind of role could he have in a movie that's just 1 hour and 49 minutes long (including credits). Will the Lord of the Abyss fight Venom? Will he attempt to communicate with a resurrected Carnage? Or will he merely be a cameo? Fortunately, new reports give us an idea of what we can expect.
Knull will reportedly have a very small role in the movie
Director Kelly Marcel confirmed Venom: The Last Dance would "set up" Knull's character for future projects. However, that could range from showing him just once on screen all the way to telling his complete origin and back story. Unfortunately, it seems the former might be the case, as hinted by reliable superhero insider Daniel Richtman:
Furthermore, scooper MyTimeToShineHello also reported The Lord of the Abyss won't get much screen time. Instead, Sony is intending to save the best for future projects (one of which could very well be Spider-Man 4).
While it may be disappointing to hear Knull will barely show up in the movie or have something to do, there's no reason to panic yet. If we look at the source material, the idea of a "symbiote god" was first introduced in Venom (2018) #1. However, it wasn't until thirty issues later that the supervillain finally arrived on Earth during the events of King in Black (2020) #1. Meanwhile, his presence was mostly felt through other characters - those who were driven mad by him, and others who actively tried to set him free.
A great horror aspect of Donny Cates' Venom comes when readers find Eddie Brock's symbiote suddenly starts talking in an ancient, unrecognizable voice while also being more violent than usual without an apparent explanation. To top things off, the Lethal Protector has a sudden change of image when a big, red spiral appears on his face. Besides, everyone around him suddenly starts repeating the phrase "god is coming" over and over again. That alone is enough to let you know something terrible will happen, even if it isn't Knull himself who does all those things. Maybe the movie could follow a similar road and settle for world-building.
While it would be easy to assume the King in Black will be the main antagonist in Venom: The Last Dance, all signs indicate that won't be the case. A leaked teaser trailer revealed the first look of an unnamed symbiote (likely to be Toxin or Lasher) who could be the real big bad doing Knull's bidding. Furthermore, director Kelly Marcel also teased that Toxin's host, Patrick Mulligan, might have company in the form of a "friend". Could audiences see some of the Life Foundation symbiotes team up to bring down the Lethal Protector? At this point, that idea seems more likely than Eddie coming face-to-face with Knull.
