Ever since the moment credits rolled on Spider-Man: No Way Home, we all knew a fourth entry in the franchise was all but guaranteed. However, very little has been officially revealed about Peter Parker's upcoming adventure even after three years. Granted, it was confirmed Jon Watts wouldn't be behind the director's chair this time around, and that Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is in early talks to helm the film. But aside from that, it's been nothing but silence from Sony and Marvel.
Fortunately, multiple reports paint a clearer picture of what could await in store for us. From the rumored villains that could steal the spotlight all the way to the jaw-dropping cameos that could blow our minds - and it doesn't end there. Much to fans' surprise, a new report claims this fan-favorite character could make a comeback even after its demise. I guess nobody is truly out of the picture in superhero projects.
Marisa Tomei will reportedly return as Aunt May in Spider-Man 4
According to scooper Marvel Leaks, Marisa Tomei is rumored to be back as Aunt May in the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4. Unfortunately, no details about her role were revealed, but the most likely scenario is her return will be limited to flashbacks. Recently, it was reported that Martin Li could be one of the main antagonists of the wall-crawler's upcoming movie. If that were to be the case, perhaps a bit of his backstory working in F.E.A.S.T. could be showcased to audiences. And wouldn't you know it, but that's where Aunt May volunteered
in during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, it's this "work" relationship between May and Martin Li that allows Peter to get closer to the supervillain. So maybe a similar situation can unfold in Spider-Man 4. The film could explain that Aunt May introduced Peter and Martin before the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which would establish a personal relationship between the two (even if the latter would forget about who Peter is due to Doctor Strange's spell).
In almost every Spider-Man movie, Peter Parker is close to the supervillains terrorizing the city before they turn evil. It makes stakes higher on all fronts - even a personal one. So if Sony wanted to attempt to do the same one more time, Aun May would be a key character to accomplish it.
Of course, there's also the highly likely possibility that May's flashback has nothing to do with any supervillain. Maybe they will just serve to explore a bit more of Peter's childhood - an area that has remained a great mystery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could audiences finally learn who Uncle Ben was in this universe? Maybe even see the moment a young Peter moves with him and his spouse? Possibilities are endless, and one thing's for certain; revisiting a bit of the wall-crawler's past would add (even more) layers to his character.
Another possibility would be for Marisa Tomei to play a "new" version of May. Since Spider-Man 4 is heavily rumored to feature the multiverse, perhaps Peter could get a glimpse of a world where her Aunt never died. It would be a heart-breaking story that could give the friendly neighborhood hero even more motivation to save the world and stop as many people from dying as possible.
