The absurd reason why Spider-Man isn't likely to appear in Daredevil: Born Again

Marvel reportedly tried to have Spider-Man cameo in Daredevil: Born Again, but there was an absurd reason why it didn't come to be.

Who doesn't love a good superhero team-up? Whether that is Luke Cage and Jessica Jones saving the day while falling in love in the process, or Cable and Deadpool violently killing everyone who crosses their paths — we can't get enough of a great Marvel duo. However, few are as iconic as New York's finest: Spider-Man and Daredevil. The two aren't just good at stopping big-name bad guys such as the Kingpin but they're also genuinely good friends in comic book pages. Matt Murdock even entrusted his secret identity to Spidey before moving out of New York for a while. With that in mind, it isn't a huge surprise fans are eager to see them cross paths on the big screen.

Spider-Man: No Way Home featured an awesome yet brief scene where Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Tom Holland's Peter Parker discussed a legal problem. Unfortunately, neither one of them had their superhero costume on, meaning no bad guys were defeated. So now that both Spider-Man 4 and Daredevil: Born Again are on the horizon, a big question in everyone's minds is: Will any of those projects feature this long-awaited team-up? Well, the latter seemed to be the most likely possibility for a while but it looks like there was a big obstacle in the road.

Sony reportedly didn't allow Spider-Man to be in Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again will reportedly adapt the events of Devil's Reign, a six-issue comic book series where Wilson Fisk takes advantage of his position as the Mayor of New York to outlaw every vigilante in the city. That led to the hunt of characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Daredevil, and Ben Reilly's version of the wall-crawler. With that in mind, many expected Tom Holland's Spider-Man to make at least a quick cameo in the TV series. On the bright side: that was reportedly the original intention. The downside? It couldn't come to be.

According to superhero insider MyTimeToShineHello, Marvel tried to get Spidey to appear in Daredevil: Born Again but Sony — the current owner of the character's rights — declined. Apparently, the studio only wants Peter to show up in the Avengers movies and nothing else. It's very discouraging to hear, but at least the wall-crawler will be mentioned in the series which is better than nothing. More than 15 years after the MCU's inception fans have yet to see the street-level duo properly interact on the big screen, but maybe it's just a matter of waiting just a little bit more.

It was recently reported that Sony will go back to basics with Peter Parker's character after his next stand-alone movie. That means Spider-Man 5 will (finally) be a grounded adventure rumored to feature Daredevil and Wilson Fisk. Besides, now that Sony's Spider-Man Universe is officially dead, Sony will focus on a huge collaborative process with Marvel for the following years, ensuring the wall-crawler has the best treatment possible. That undoubtedly means he'll get to cross paths with other great heroes who aren't played by Robert Downey Jr.

We're still more than a year away from the release of Spider-Man 4, and who knows how long it will take for the fifth installment in the saga to see the light of day. But perhaps the Peter Parker and Matt Murdock team-up could happen in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which isn't as far. After all, if Devil's Reign does become a storyline in the MCU, chances are we'll see it be built up across many projects. So fingers crossed that, at least on one of them, we see New York's finest beat Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin up.

Daredevil: Born Again will be released on March 2025.
