Marvel's Spider-Man 2 upgrades for the PS5 Pro revealed and fans are disappointed
It's been over a year since players had the chance to experience Isomniac's latest masterpiece: Marvel's Spider-Man 2. While it can be argued its predecessor had a better overall story, all other aspects of the game were improved for the sequel, including combat, graphics, traversal, side quests, animations, and even the tutorial section. As such, fans eagerly awaited an expansion to keep the adventure going, but lo and behold, that unfortunately never came to be. However, that doesn't mean the game won't be updated soon.
Back in September, the PlayStation 5 Pro was announced at $700 - which needless to say is a very high price point. With that in mind, players are eager to see what upgrades games will have on Sony's newest console and to determine if the purchase is worthwhile. Now, we finally know which enhancements are coming to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and they're... nothing too groundbreaking.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 Pro upgrades revealed, and fans are not too excited
PlayStation released a new video breaking down Marvel's Spider-Man 2 enhancements for its latest console. (which you can watch above) The most notable change is being able to run the game with fidelity-mode-like graphics at 60 frames per second. Besides, it's mentioned ray tracing is now two to three times as fast, more details are rendered in the distance, and AI upscaling allows for improved visuals. Unfortunately, none of these changes can be really appreciated online due to video compression. And that's exactly where the problem of these upgrades relies; they aren't anything new, but enhancements you need to see in real life on a high-quality TV to fully appreciate.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 already had ray-traced reflections, a solid render distance, and the option to play either at 60fps or 4k resolution. So fans are disappointed that the latest updates don't include new features or additional content, but rather just small tweaks. When Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered was announced, many felt like it was an unnecessary addition to Insomniac's saga but at least it added new features to the base game such as ray-traced reflections. Now, that isn't the case.
On the bright side, this is a free update that would come in handy if you were already planning on getting a PS5 Pro. However, if you were looking for a reason to upgrade your current console, chances are that the quality-of-life updates in this game (or others) won't be enough. To be honest, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is already a beautiful game as it is, so there's only so much significant "upgrading" you can do until the differences become less and less notable.
At the moment, it might be better to wait until the PS5 Pro releases and people play the game first-hand to determine if the upgrade is worth it or not. Until then, a base PS5 or PC should still do the trick.
