Next month will mark one year since the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Since it hit shelves, it has been considered by many as the best video game ever made starring the wall-crawler himself (or two of them, in this case). Players could swing across the New York City skyline and fight a wide variety of bad guys along the way, fulfilling the amazing fantasy of being in the shoes of a superhero. And now, we can relieve that fantasy once again... with a higher resolution, of course. That's right, true believers, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will receive an update to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro

On September 10, 2024, Sony hosted a video presentation to unveil the PS5 Pro; the next console in the PlayStation family. Its goal is to remove the need for players to choose between a fidelity or performance mode when playing their favorite games - which is a common practice nowadays. To achieve that, the PS5 Pro will include the following features:

  • An upgraded GPU that allows a 45% faster graphical render for gameplay compared to the base PS5.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing, which enables rays to be cast at double the speed of the current generation of Sony consoles.
  • PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, which is an AI Upscaling library that uses machine learning to boost the effect of the resolution in games.

During the presentation, viewers caught a glimpse of an enhanced version of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 running directly on the PS5 Pro. The most notable changes include fidelity-like graphics while the game runs at 60fps. That means background elements in New York City, such as trees and cars, will have a higher resolution, as seen in the video. Meanwhile, the game will run more smoothly as well. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how the Advance Ray Tracing will affect the game.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 already made use of the base PS5's ray tracing to show the reflections of the wall-crawler in the windows of buildings and cars. Could that effect upgraded to allow for an increase in the reflection distance? Well, only time will tell, but such a change could definitely be included. Finally, it's worth noting that more titles will be enhanced for Sony's latest console. You can read the full list here, with a few highlights being Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, The Last of Us Part II, and more.

A DLC reveal could come next week

Insider Lunatic Ignus correctly reported the release window of Sony's PS5 Pro presentation. Furthermore, their report also claimed a State of Play focusing on first-party PlayStation games will be coming on September 19 or 20. If that ends up being the case, then chances are Insomniac Games will finally reveal DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

We've known new content is coming thanks to an update that mistakenly allowed players to access the developer mode in the game. Fans were quick to note a list of levels that included a few missions that were nowhere to be found in the main campaign, as well as the mention of a villain we have yet to see in Insomniac's franchise. So what better time to announce the DLC than right after the reveal of a new PS5 Pro console? While nothing is set in stone and it would be better to keep our expectations in check, we can't help the feeling that something is definitely coming.

The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024, at a price point of 700 USD.
