Ever since the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, fans have wondered if there was DLC in store for the game. After all, its predecessor had an expansion not even two months after its release. Furthermore, the main campaign of Spidey's latest adventure left some story arcs open. What about the crimson hour? Will that prophecy finally come to life now that Cletus Kasady has the Carnage symbiote? What happened to the Chameleon now that Kraven's dead? And what was that whole deal with the Beetles levels found in the debug menu of the game? All signs seemed to indicate something was coming. But as days went by, fans started to worry perhaps that wouldn't be the case, and now it's finally confirmed.
No story DLC is coming for Marvel's Spider-Man 2
During the Marvel Games Special Presentation panel at New York Comic Con, PlayStation officially announced a PC port for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Along with the reveal trailer, they also posted a blog that goes over the details of what players should expect when the port launches on January 30, 2025. Additionally, they also took the opportunity to clear all doubts and officially confirm no story DLC will be coming to the base game:
"While we have no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re delighted to bring all of our previously released post-launch content to the PC version, including New Game+, new suits and color variants, Photo Mode features, and more."
It's a tough pill to swallow for all fans of the wall-crawler. Granted, a DLC was never confirmed to begin with and most of the build-up in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was always meant to be for a third game in the franchise. Norman Osborn turning into the Green Goblin is a story worth its own title, just as Doctor Octopus breaking out of prison. However, the Chameleon storyline seemed perfect for an expansion given that it could've closed Kraven's arc as a whole (who was one of the main villains in Insomniac's latest title). The same can be said for Carnage, as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 shined the spotlight on symbiotes. If a third game in the franchise comes, it will likely stay away from that theme to avoid feeling repetitive.
Fans speculate the reason no DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be released is because that content will be repurposed for other future games. A Venom spin-off has been heavily rumored for quite some time now. Voice actor Tony Todd confirmed that 90% of the voice lines he recorded weren't in the base game. And while it's common for any superhero project to leave a lot of content on the cutting-room floor, that percentage just seems like a lot.
Of course, at this point, it's better not to get excited until Insomniac Games themselves officially confirm what the wall-crawler's future will look like. However, it's fair to say the franchise is far from over. While it may be disappointing to learn no expansion will be coming soon, we still have the release of Marvel's Wolverine at some point in the future. Meanwhile, the PC port of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is just around the corner.
