Exactly one month away from its release, the first official trailer for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was released, and people had their opinions. When you're making an adaptation of the wall-crawler—one of the greatest characters ever created with no shortage of amazing TV shows, movies, video games, and comic books—you either make it amazing or go home. Unfortunately, the upcoming Disney+ series hasn't exactly wowed everyone.
Some feel conflicted about the wall-crawler being a streamer, and others aren't fond of the animation itself (I'll forever say that Spider-Man: The New Animated Series did the 3D style better). Now, fans are voicing their disappointment about a brand new reveal, and we can see why.
Spidey's new suit didn't get the name right
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will feature no shortage of suits. Peter will start with the usual homemade costume before eventually ranking up and sporting way better and more advanced looks. The first trailer even gave us a glimpse of Spidey's Future Foundation Suit, which is so iconic and beloved that has even appeared in the likes of Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4.
This outfit was given to Peter by Mr. Fantastic when he web-slinger joined the Future Foundation after the death of the Human Torch. It's made of unstable molecules which allows it to change its design with just a thought from Peter (similar to the Picotech Suit recently seen in Ultimate Spider-Man).
With the reveal that the Future Foundation Suit would be coming to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, many expected the Fantastic Four to make an appearance as well and gift it to Peter. It would make sense given the costume's history and the fact that the Disney+ series isn't connected to any other Marvel Cinematic Universe project. Even if Marvel's First Family has yet to make an appearance on the big screen under the Disney umbrella, they could very well show up on the small screen as different variants. But lo and behold, it looks like that won't be the case as Reed Richards won't be responsible for creating the iconic suit, but rather Norman Osborn.
It's enough to get a quick look at the replies to the Tweet above to see that fans aren't happy about this change. Why wouldn't Marvel simply come up with a brand-new design for the Oscorp Suit? Even Zeb Wells' unanimously hated The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) run had a unique look for the suit Peter created alongside Norman Osborn. And let's be honest for a second: Even if we all love to dislike The Amazing Spider-Man (2022), its Goblin-inspired costume wasn't ugly at all. It could've easily made its way into the Disney+ series. And if that wasn't the MCU's cup of tea, they should've simply come up with something new.
I'll admit—in the great scheme of things—this is a rather small change. However, this whole controversy could've easily been avoided. Why did Marvel feel the need to reimage the origin of such an iconic look that's commonly associated with the Human Torch's death? Learning fans weren't too fond of Tony Stark creating Spidey's costume in the MCU should've been a lesson big enough not to repeat this mistake. But lo and behold, here we are.
Even Insomniac Games refused to include the Black Suit as a simple cosmetic skin in Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4. They waited until the second game to properly dive into the origins of the symbiote and make justice to such an iconic look. Sometimes, there are stories beloved enough that you just have to honor them as opposed to changing them. Unfortunately, that wasn't true for Spidey's upcoming series, so fingers crossed they manage to respect the source material in all other aspects. After all, we all thought it was supposed to be a love letter to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's era of the character. So let's hope this isn't an indication that love and care won't be poured into the small details.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be released on Jan. 29, 2025, on Disney+.
