Top 3 Spider-Man video game announcements we want to see in 2025

2024 was a very quiet year for the wall-crawler in the video game world. So all eyes are on 2025 to change that by making these big announcements.

Unfortunately, 2024 wasn't kind to our friendly neighborhood hero in the video game department. Sure, Marvel Rivals was released with great levels of acclaim and it featured Spider-Man as a playable hero. Besides, Insomniac announced a PC port of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is officially coming in January. But aside from that? Well, it was confirmed long-awaited DLC for Peter and Miles' latest adventure on PlayStation consoles would never see the light of day. While many of us expected to hop right back into the game in 2024 with new story content, that wasn't the case. And besides that? Well, we got nothing. No new announcements or releases that could make the year a standout. So now that 2024 is over, it's time to look at the different ways in which 2025 can surpass its predecessor while taking us all by surprise in the process.

The announcement and release of a Venom spin-off game

Do you remember that awesome mission in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 where you took control of Venom and broke all hell loose inside Oscorp Industries? Well, what if we could have a complete game like that?

Insomniac Games was unfortunately hacked back in December 2023. Without going into too much detail about what was disclosed and uncovered — the developer had plans to release a Venom: Lethal Protector spin-off in 2025. Now, that release window is looking pretty unlikely if we assume the title is still in development. After all, it's worth remembering the hack also unveiled plans for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to get DLC in 2024. However, not only did the year come and go with no DLC release, but Insomniac officially announced no story-based content would be coming to their latest game.

Scrapping a DLC is completely different from scrapping a whole game. So perhaps a Venom stand-alone title is still coming. But if it were to be released in 2025, then it's impossible not to think Insomniac would've shown something at the Game Awards 2024. There's still time for the developer to announce, promote, and release a game throughout the same year. However, this one is looking less and less likely as time goes by. The spin-off is still a perfectly valid entry for a wishlist, but we'd be all better by keeping our expectations in check.

We'd love to see Miles Morales in Marvel Rivals before the end of the year

So far, we've had no indication Miles Morales is coming to Marvel Rivals. Dataminers have uncovered files for Ultron, Reed Richards, The Thing, Invisible Human, the Human Torch, Valkyrie, and many other characters (which you can see here). Yet, there's no indication the successor of Ultimate Spider-Man will make his way into the game. That being said, we can still dream.

Peter Parker's Spider-Man was already one of the 33 characters that were available from the get-go when Marvel Rivals was released. He has a pretty complicated moveset that I still haven't managed to master, but people who do know how to control him seem to be having the time of their lives. Now, the easiest way to incorporate Miles into the game would be to simply add a skin of the character that's already there. However, developer NetEase could make use of his unique Venom and invisibility powers to create new engaging gameplay mechanics.

Perhaps bringing Miles into Marvel Rivals isn't a priority with everything NetEase has on its plate right now. But fingers crossed he's able to appear before the end of the year (assuming he'll eventually come, that is).

Marvel's Spider-Man 3 announcement

Given that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was released a little over a year ago, it's fair to assume its sequel is still a long way off. However, that doesn't mean we couldn't expect the trilogy-capper to be announced at The Game Awards 2025 — more than two years after the release of its predecessor, and perhaps two or three years before its eventual arrival. After all, it's worth keeping in mind that Marvel's Wolverine was announced all the way back in September 2021, and we have not heard anything about it even after three years.

It's pretty common for video game developers to make very early announcements to attract the attention of investors and let fans know what is coming. The Elder Scrolls VI was unveiled in 2018 with a cinematic trailer, and fans have yet to see gameplay more than six years later. Likewise, Beyond Good & Evil 2 had a cinematic trailer back in 2018 as well and then Ubisoft went radio silent (making us all think the game is canceled even if it had a development update in October 2024). Granted, it's unlikely for Insomniac to announce Marvel's Spider-Man 3 more than six years before its release. However, it's fair to assume the game could arrive in 2027 or 2028 (four or five years after Marvel's Spider-Man 2), making a 2025 announcement all the more likely.

Miles and Peter's story is far from over in the video game genre. Carnage is still on the loose, The Chamelion has yet to make a strike, and Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin will team up. Many stories are still on the horizon, so hopefully we'll get a glimpse of them in 2025.
