Sony wants to bring back to life this dead Spider-Man-related movie, says report
Spider-Man is such a big and beloved superhero that Sony is building a franchise around his set of supporting characters in comic book pages. The first Venom movie paved the way for many more adventures to come such as the ill-fated Madame Web and Morbius, as well as promising movies such as Kraven the Hunter. But now that the Lethal Protector saga is coming to an end with Venom: The Last Dance, Sony might be looking for new anti-heroes to take the spotlight, and they might've just found the ideal one if a new report is to be believed.
Sony is reportedly working on a Silver Sable movie
According to renowned superhero insider Daniel Richtman, Sony is currently working on a Silver Sable movie. Interestingly enough, this wouldn't mark the first time the studio has given the project the green flag. Back in 2014, a Spider-Man spin-off with a female lead was officially in development, and in 2017 the existence of Silver & Black was revealed. The film would've featured a team-up between two iconic Spider-Man characters: Silver Sable and Black Cat.
Gina Prince-Bythewood was set to direct a screenplay co-written by herself, Lindsey Beer, Lisa Joy, and Chris Yost. Multiple Spider-Man villains were going to make an appearance, such as Chameleon, Scorpion, Tarantula, and more. Furthermore, the titular anti-heroes were initially supposed to go against each other before finally joining forces in the final act. However, just a few months before shooting started, production was delayed indefinitely due to director Prince-Bythewood being unsatisfied with the script. Ultimately, the project was canceled, and Sony shifted directions and planned to work on two different projects for Silver Sable and Black Cat. Now, it seems the former may finally come to life.
The latest news comes after it was reported that Sony is also looking to work on another axed Spider-Man project in the form of The Sinister Six. Perhaps the success of the Venom movies and the positive early impressions of Kraven: The Hunter have put the studio in a position where they're able to develop more Spider-Man-related projects. Of course, it's worth remembering that not everything has been smooth sailing, as movies such as Morbius and Madame Web flopped at the box office and failed to impress critics and fans alike.
There are still many questions surrounding Sony's Spider-Man Universe. First and foremost, there isn't a version of the wall-crawler to fight all these supervillains being introduced on the big screen. Furthermore, it doesn't appear there's a clear path forward. On the one hand, Michael Keaton's Vulture traveled from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Morbius' universe out of nowhere to tease the creation of the Sinister Six. On the other, Venom is reportedly traveling to the MCU to team up with Tom Holland's Spider-Man and fight Knull, so there are two separate roads that don't seem to connect whatsoever.
It's unclear what the future holds for Sony's Spider-Man Universe - but all signs would indicate Silver Sable will be a part of it. Are you excited for this Spider-Man spin-off? Let us know on our social media pages! And stick around with Whatever A Spider Can for everything Spider-Man-related.
