Top 7 superhero games to look forward to after Marvel's Spider-Man 2
October will mark one year since the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Insomniac's latest project delivers on the promise of swinging across the New York skyline while stopping bad guys in a way very few other games have managed to do so. Many consider it one the best Spider-Man titles ever made to date and with good reason. Its mix of engaging gameplay mechanics, a powerful storyline, and jaw-dropping graphics positioned as a must-play for superhero fans.
Unfortunately, DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has yet to be released (though an announcement may come really soon). But while we wait for such an anticipated day, it's time to look ahead and determine which are the best superhero games that will be released in the upcoming years. However, it's worth noting that unannounced titles (such as Warner Bros. Montreal's upcoming DC project) won't be making their way onto this list. So now that we set some ground rules, let's see what the future has in store for us.
7. Marvel Rivals
NetEase's Marvel Rivals is a PVP shooter that will make the most out of the Marvel universe to feature iconic heroes, villains, and locations that fans will recognize in a heartbeat. Better yet; it will be free to play, and no playable characters will be locked behind a paywall. As if it wasn't enough, the game will feature destructible environments and a version of the wall-crawler voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (who has played the character in Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man franchise). Fortunately, it won't be long before we finally get our hands on it, as it will be released on December 6, 2024, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S.
6. Marvel's Blade
If you love video games, chances are you've heard about Arkane Studios - the iconic developer behind acclaimed titles such as Deathloop, Prey, and Dishonored. However, they will undergo their biggest challenge yet as they work on a project starring the world's most iconic vampire hunter.
Marvel's Blade won't be for the faint of heart. It will take players to a version of Paris struck by a quarantine zone due to a vampire infestation. While an official rating hasn't been revealed, the official concept art lets us see a few dead bodies covered in blood - which could indicate the game is meant for mature audiences. Unfortunately, a release date hasn't been revealed yet by Marvel, Arkhane Studios, or Xbox. But perhaps 2025 will be the year when we finally learn more about Blade's upcoming adventure.
5. Cliffhanger's Black Panther
Now, this one is really surrounded by mystery. After all, Cliffhanger Games is one of the latest additions to the EA family, meaning they have yet to publish a title. So it comes as quite a surprise that its first game will be one with Black Panther as the main character.
Very few details are known about this intriguing adventure. However, it was revealed it will take place in Wakanda, which is described as "a rich superhero sandbox" which could indicate the presence of an open world. Furthermore, Cliffhanger Games are reworking the way players approach a single-player, narrative-driven game. They want us to have more "control over the narrative than we ever experienced" which is no small statement by any means.
Unfortunately, no trailer, concept art, or release date has been revealed for Cliffhanger's Black Panther. But fingers crossed that changes really soon!
4. EA Motive's Iron Man
For as popular as a hero as Iron Man is, he has yet to be the star of his own stand-alone video game (one that isn't a rushed movie tie-in, or a fascinating VR experience). Fortunately, that will change soon with EA Motive's Iron Man.
In case you aren't familiar with the studio, they worked on the recent Dead Space remake which was praised by fans and critics alike. Hopefully, that experience will come in handy when working on their upcoming Marvel title. Unreal Engine 5 will give life to this third-person, action-adventure experience. But beyond that, very little is known about this upcoming game other than it is a big priority for EA. But the day we finally learn more will be one for the history books, without a doubt.
3. Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman
A Wonder Woman game has been long overdue. Fortunately, that will change thanks to Monolith Productions.
Aside from a pre-rendered trailer, nothing has been (officially) revealed about Diana Prince's venture into the gaming world in her own stand-alone adventure. However, a marketing survey from Warner Brothers spilled the beans about what can we expect when we finally visit the work of Themyscira. Some of the highlights include Circe seemingly being the main villain and the inclusion of free-flow combat much like the one used in the Batman Arkham saga. Furthermore, the game will make use of the Nemesis System (seen in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor) to remember the player's actions and react accordingly through NPCs.
December will mark three years since the reveal of Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman. So let's hope a full reveal with a first look at the gameplay is just around the corner.
2. Marvel's Wolverine
At this point, Insomniac Games is no stranger to creating breathtaking, exhilarating, and polished superhero games. Their work on Marvel's Spider-Man and the Ratchet & Clank franchise has positioned them as one of the best gaming studios out there. Fortunately, their relationship with Marvel is only beginning.
Back in 2021, it was revealed Insomniac was working on a Wolverine game. Unfortunately, over three years have gone by since that day and we have yet to learn more about this highly-anticipated title. Granted, we can expect it to be set in the same world as their Spider-Man games and feature lots of violent set pieces. But little more is (officially) known. It seems PlayStation might be gearing up for a big event; one where they showcase many of their upcoming first-party projects. So fingers crossed that will include Wolverine and a glimpse of its gameplay mechanics.
1. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
Amy Hennig is well known for her role as writer and director of the first three Uncharted games - explosive titles filled with adventure, discovery, and jaw-dropping set pieces. After her work in Naughty Dog was done, she opened a new division in Skydance Media (called Skydance New Media) and started working on her biggest project to date starring beloved Marvel characters.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will feature not only one or two but four playable characters. We'll step into the shoes of Captain America, Black Panther, Gabriel Jones, and Nanali as they attempt to stop Hydra's uprising. The game's story trailer showcases beautiful graphics with jaw-dropping facial animations, as well as glimpses of Captain America fighting Black Panther. It's an exhilarating project, and fortunately, it won't be long before we finally learn more about it.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has a release window of 2025. So could we see a gameplay reveal at this year's Game Awards? Fingers crossed that's the case!
