Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to suffer a creative reboot and delay says report
Update: Composer Daniel Pemberton recently weighed in on the matter, telling people not to believe every rumor on the internet since it may not be accurate. Furthermore, Christopher Miller confirmed that no part of the movie had been scrapped, denying that the creative reboot was happening. The original article follows ahead:
Just when it seemed like a good day to be a Spider-Man fan (given the reported reveal of Spider-Man 4's director), bad luck struck in a big way. The Spider-Verse franchise is considered by many one of the holy grails of superhero cinema, portraying the best aspects of multiple wall-crawler variants while letting us know anyone can be under the mask. A ground-breaking animation style mixed with impressive storytelling allowed Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse to become instant classics for all superhero fans. Naturally, everyone eagerly awaits the culmination of the franchise with the upcoming release of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, a very long wait may lie ahead of us if a new report is to be believed.
Beyond the Spider-Verse could suffer a delay amidst a creative reboot.
Originally slated for a release date of March 2024, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was delayed indefinitely to give creators more time to work on the film and ensure the best possible result. However, nobody expected it to be set back until 2027 at the earliest, which could be the case as claimed by scooper The InSneider. This would come as a direct result of Sony allegedly scrapping most of the work already done for the movie due to "creative reasons".
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've heard about problems behind the scenes at Sony Pictures. Rumors of turmoils began as early as June 23, 2023, when it was reported that over 100 artists quit during the production of Across The Spider-Verse due to unsustainable and even "relentless" work conditions, caused in part by co-producer Phil Lord's preference to edit fully rendered 3D scenes instead of 2D mock-ups.
Furthermore, it was recently rumored that Sony wouldn't renew Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's contract, which gave the duo of filmmakers creative oversight of a slate of Spider-Man TV projects. This decision was reportedly made after arduous fights over Spider-Man Noir's budget, with the studio claiming it was way overboard.
However, the situation could be even more dire than anticipated if Sony is really scrapping most of the work in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Of course, the question has to be asked: Why now? Across the Spider-Verse was released on June 2, 2023, meaning its sequel has been in the works for over one year (and perhaps even more given the original release date of March 2024). What could've happened that was bad enough to delay the movie to 2027 and start almost from scratch? It's important to remember the animated franchise has seen a great amount of critical and commercial success so far - which would usually be seen as a green light to follow the original planned arc. Unfortunately, we may never know how different the final result could end up being from what was being worked on.
Until Sony makes an official statement regarding the release date of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse it's better to take all rumors with a grain of salt - including this one. However, the suspicious lack of a release date for the movie may signal bad news. So let's hope that doesn't end up being the case.
