After months of tireless waiting, the first official trailer for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is finally here. What was originally the tale of how Tom Holland's Peter Parker became the wall-crawler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe changed mid-production to be reimagined as a new stand-alone origin story. This shift in direction will allow the series to feature an even greater cast of Marvel characters without being constrained by other projects under the Disney umbrella. We already know the likes of Daredevil and Doctor Strange will appear, while heroes such as Captain America also made a brief but welcome appearance in the trailer as an easter egg.
However, our extended look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man also packed more obscure and difficult-to-spot references. Some of them indicate big-name villains are coming, while others are just a little nod to other Spider-Man projects across different mediums. So without further ado, here are the four easter eggs you (likely) missed in Marvel's latest trailer.
1. Screwball's name appears on stream
At the 1:03 mark in the trailer, we see Spidey defeat society's worst modern problem: A group of prank streamers. After catching them all up on a web, the superhero grabs their cell phone and salutes their live audience. However, if you look closely at the live-chat spamming comments such as "L + ratio", you'll see there's a very particular username in there, and that is "Screwball". The Marvel internet sensation posted a comment saying "If you guys want to see better content, check out my channel!!!"
Keeping in mind not even Insomniac Games managed to make Screwball work, I really hope this one stays just as an easter egg and isn't a tease of future villains to come. Nonetheless, it shows the people behind Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will make use of the extended Marvel Universe to pack the series with easter eggs and cameos. It's a nice little touch, even if the character in question isn't so nice per se.
2. Our first look at Scorpion is here
Let's fast-forward to the 1:48 mark where the show's title is displayed. If you look at the top center area of the background, you'll see a very curious-looking character carrying a green backpack that has a mechanical stinger attached. That's none other than Mac Gargan AKA The Scorpion. While we only see his back, it's nice to get confirmation that the popular Spider-Man villain will make an appearance in the series given that the live-action MCU movies refuse to make use of him for some reason.
Of course, this prompts the question of whether J. Jonah Jameson will show too, and if he'll be the man responsible for the Scorpion's creation as it was in comic book pages. On the bright side, we won't have to wait long to finally find out.
3. The iconic cover of Amazing Fantasy is re-imagined
At the three-second mark, we get our very first reference in the form of the comic book cover shown on screen. It's a perfect re-creation of Spider-Man's first-ever appearance back in 1962 on Amazing Fantasy #15. It's worth pointing out that this still is also the variant cover of the recently released Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2024) #1 issue.
The Disney+ show as a whole is meant to pay respect to the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko era of the character. While it remains to be seen if that huge task will be accomplished, little nods like this paint a very promising picture.
4. Spider-Man's first scene in the MCU is recreated
Let's go back to Spider-Man's first-ever project in the MCU after the Sony and Marvel deal: Captain America: Civil War. Tony Stark arrived at the teenager's house in Queens and directly confronted him about having superpowers. While Peter initially tries to play dumb, Tony shows him a video of him fully suited up swinging between buildings at full speed and jumping in front of a car to catch it before it crashes directly into a bus. Well, that very same sequence is practically recreated frame by frame in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
At the 1:15 time mark on the trailer, we see this new variant of Spider-Man catch a car right before it crashes into a bus filled with people. The sequence perfectly mimics the iconic scene in Captain America: Civil War and it further cements the idea that the Disney+ show was once meant to show the origin of Tom Holland's Spider-Man on the MCU.
Bonus: the Kingpin is confirmed to make an appearance
While not an easter egg featured in the trailer, it's worth pointing out that the Kingpin was recently confirmed to make an appearance in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The supervillain will be voiced by none other than Vincent D'Onofrio, who also portrayed the character in Netfix's Daredevil and Marvel's Echo. It seems like a no-brainer, given that the mob boss and Spider-Man have a complicated history in comic book pages. Currently, the character is the main antagonist of the Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) series and he's had a huge role to play in many other comic book runs, TV series, and video games in the past.
With the reveal that Silvername will act as one of the main villains in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, perhaps it will be revealed that he's just one of the Kingping's puppets. Could Wilson Fisk secretly be the big bad of the series? Well, there's only one way to find out.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be released on Jan. 29, 2025.
