If you're up to date in the current The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) run, first of all: I salute you. I imagine it wasn't necessarily an easy task to accomplish. Second of all: You're aware that the latest chapter in the wall-crawler's history hasn't been the most memorable to date. Zeb Wells broke up fan-favorite couple Peter and M.J., created one of Spider-Man's most hated characters to date in the form of Paul, and turned the friendly neighborhood hero evil after having him inherit the Green Goblin's sins. However, that's all behind us now as new writers have taken over the saga.
While The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man sees Joe Kelly behind the writer's seat—along with the help of the fantastic Justina Ireland—this latest arc still follows the story that Zeb Wells previously built. Some fans have (understandably) not been eager to see the wall-crawler literally die multiple times in a row, even if the past four issues have undoubtedly been a resurgence of The Amazing Spider-Man series. It seems the ideal scenario would be if Joe Kelly was still on the lead and in charge of his own story instead of one that was previously set up. Well, lo and behold, that's exactly what will happen later this year, and fans are happy about it.
The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series will get a new start
In April 2025, a new era will begin in The Amazing Spider-Man comic book saga. Joe Kelly will be the main writer behind it, with John Romita Jr as the main penciler and Pepe Larraz as the cover artist. This new chapter will feature the "classic Spidey storytelling" that fans have been eager to see for quite some time now. A new mystery will be presented as Peter tries to uncover who is the mastermind weaponizing iconic villains such as The Rhino (who Spidey will face in issue #1). Furthermore, it was also revealed we'll get to see a big bad that we haven't seen in more than seven years, which is a bold yet exciting claim to make.
Of course, the superhero epic is just one part of the story. Peter will also have his fair share of problems as he'll be unemployed and looking for a gig. But that's just the start. According to writer Joe Kelly, Spider-Man will have to deal with a lot of pressure in this new arc:
"I feel a drive to take bold, unexpected swings in order to see how Spider-Man deals with Marvel-sized curve balls. Pressure makes diamonds."
Even though this is a brand new chapter, Norman Osborn's redemption will still be a thing. Besides, Shay will continue to date Peter Parker as it's happened over the last few issues. But even then, fans couldn't be more excited for the wall-crawler to have a new beginning. Currently, The Amazing Spider-Man saga is synonymous with bad storytelling and controversial decisions. Fans have looked elsewhere (like the absolutely spectacular Ultimate Spider-Man run) for a good Spidey adventure. So fingers crossed this new era manages to turn things around. Marvel has a blank canvas perfect to regain the faith of fans, so hopefully they make the most out of it.
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, John Romita Jr, and Pepe Larraz will be released on April 09, 2025.
