Spider-Man 2099 could make his live-action debut in this huge MCU movie
Since making his big-screen debut in the after-credits scene in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse in 2018, fans of Spider-Man 2099 have been chomping at the bit to see him get some real screen time. Thanks to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023, fans got what they ordered when Oscar Isaac voiced Miguel O’Hara in the major antagonist role of the film. And now, thanks to Marvel Leaks on Twitter, there’s a rumor that Oscar Isaac may be reprising this role for Avengers: Secret Wars.
This is, of course, perfect casting. Oscar Isaac is both built like a Spider-Man and has that future-hero gravitas that can carry the role of a hero, an anti-hero, or even a villain! Am I biased because I’m in love with Oscar Isaac? Maybe! But I’m also not wrong, as Marvel has already cast Oscar Isaac in a similarly complex role: Moon Knight.
Fans have already cited this as a problem for the rumored reprisal of Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara—how is he going to play two different roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Never mind that Robert Downey Jr. has died as Tony Stark and will be coming back as Victor Von Doom and that Chris Evans has been Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm across franchises; they worry that this might mean a sidelining of Marc Spector in the greater MCU.
This is absolutely a valid concern, especially when considering Marc Spector as a character. Moon Knight is a man with one face and several alters: Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley. This is addressed in the comics in the miniseries with a tragic backstory that culminates in the reveal that Marc has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and the alters are his brain’s way of coping with his trauma. In real life, the collection of alters a body has is known as a ‘system’ rather than a person because it’s not just one person or personality. So if Oscar Isaac were to be introduced as Spider-Man 2099 with that same face, what’s to keep audiences from thinking it’s just another alter of the same system? This is why Moon Knight fans fear that Marc might be kept out of the greater story entirely to avoid confusion.
I’m of multiple minds here, no pun intended. I’m a big fan of Moon Knight and would love to see him incorporated with the other heroes of the MCU. I also love Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara. I understand all the problems and risks of carrying forward with this casting, but I think Oscar Isaac would be able to pull this off. He’s amazing, and we’re lucky to have him.
For now, this is just a rumor, though. We’ll have to keep rewatching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the meantime if we want our Spider-Osar fix and hope Miguel has a significant role in Part 2.
