This iconic Activision Spider-Man game could see a revival (and what does it mean)
For many years, Activision held the rights to multiple Marvel video games - including those starring Spider-Man. It was one rollercoaster of a ride with many highs such as Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and some underwhelming lows like The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But whether you love or hate them - those titles aren't available for purchase anymore. That's unfortunate, especially if you're looking to play as the wall-crawler in a game that isn't set in Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man franchise.
However, in an interesting turn of events, it may appear those classic Activision titles may not be as dead as they seemed. That's huge news for superhero fans, as they featured beloved Marvel characters including the X-Men, Blade, Deadpool, The Avengers, and, of course, the friendly neighborhood hero himself. Better yet; it could all start with the revival of these two iconic games.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Deadpool could see a comeback
According to Tech4Gamers, Xbox and Activision are looking to re-license Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Deadpool. The timing for the latter couldn't be more perfect, as the recent success of Deadpool & Wolverine made the Merc With a Mouth more of a household character than he already was. Unfortunately, fans can't currently buy his amazing video game (starring Nolan North) which is a really fun and exhilarating ride by all means. So it's great to know that could change soon.
As for Marvel Ultimate Alliance - which features Spider-Man as a playable character - the timing couldn't be more perfect either. The title saw Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the X-Men come together to stop Doctor Doom from taking over Earth. On the same page, audiences could see a similar story play out in a few years with the big-screen release of Avengers: Doomsday. So now that movie-tie-ins aren't really a thing, Marvel Ultimate Alliance could be the closest we get to ever playing an adaptation of the highly-awaited live-action crossover.
What would the return of these games mean for Spidey?
As Tech4Gamers notes, the restoration of Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Deadpool could also push for the revival of other classic games - such as those starring Spider-Man. It's a bit of a complicated situation since Marvel Games wouldn't really want to take the focus away from Insomniac's current franchise - turning themselves into their own competitors. However, what's important to note is that we're dealing with two different player bases. Insomniac's titles are exclusive to PlayStation consoles and, on the other hand, Activision now falls under the Xbox umbrella which means their games would be released on PC and the Series X/S consoles.
Currently, Xbox players can't purchase a Spider-Man game even if they wanted. However, the revival of the Activision games could result in having active players across all platforms. Maybe there's a universe where Marvel manages to make it all work without having two new Spider-Man game franchises fighting for the spotlight - considering Activision would only remake or remaster its old titles.
