Ever since it was announced Jon Watts wouldn't return for a fourth Spider-Man movie, fans have wondered who would be the ideal pick to replace him. For a time, rumors seemed to indicate one of the most likely candidates was Sam Raimi fresh after his work in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and with the experience of helming Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy. However, a new report seems to take things in a different new direction (pun intended) and it's one fans might not have seen coming.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will reportedly direct Spider-Man 4

According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will helm the next stand-alone Spidey adventure. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, It's worth noting that they have already worked on other successful projects set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could open a few doors for them in the future. The filmmaking duo directed episodes #2 (Summon the Suit) and #4 (The Tomb) of Moon Knight, as well as episodes #1 (Ouroboros), #4 (Heart of the TVA), #5 (Science/Fiction), and #6 (Glorious Purpose) of Loki.

Furthermore, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are well-known for their venture into horror projects such as Resolution. That experience could come in handy if Venom indeed shows up in Spider-Man 4 as some rumors would suggest. The supernatural elements of the symbiote arc could lend themselves to darker (and perhaps a little frightening) themes.

However, all signs seem to indicate Peter Parker will be the star of a multiversal story for the second time in a row. And if Loki proves anything, is that the filmmaking duo can handle multiple characters at the same time. Furthermore, they already have the experience of showcasing alternate universes on the screen which is surely required.

Even if Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead weren't on the top of fans' list of potential Spider-Man 4 directors, they could prove to be a great choice. However, it's important to take all rumors with a grain of salt and not get too excited ahead of time. After all, it would appear the wall-crawler's next stand-alone adventure will begin filming next year, so an official reveal and director choice will likely come this year. And when that happens, we'll be sure to break it all down here in Whatever A Spider Can.

Spider-Man 4 could be a multiverse movie after all (and why that's worrying). Spider-Man 4 could be a multiverse movie after all (and why that's worrying). dark. Next
