Insomniac shares disappointing update regarding Marvel's Spider-Man 2; fans shocked

Just when it seemed like enough time had passed for Insomniac Games to announce DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, they revealed very disappointing news.

It's been over 290 days (and counting) since the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and while there have been a few quality-of-life updates and costumes added post-launch, players have yet to play any new DLC missions. That's quite shocking, especially considering how it only took over a month for its predecessor, Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, to see the release of its first episodic expansion. To make matters worse, we've known for quite a while that something new is definitely coming, we just don't know when.

As weeks went by, players began to wonder when would Insomniac Games lift the curtain and finally share more news about their upcoming DLC. Unfortunately, that day has yet to come. So fans took it upon themselves to ask the developer on X (formerly Twitter) what was really going on, and the response was highly disappointing. It would appear we won't be playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 DLC any time soon.

By the looks of the tweet, it would even seem that no new expansion will be released. So how are we so sure it even is in the works?

DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man was (indirectly) confirmed earlier this year

On March 7, Insomniac Games released the first big expansion for its latest Marvel title. The update included several highly requested features by the community such as New Game Plus, allowing players to change the time of day, changing the color of the symbiote suit's tendrils, enabling audio descriptions, and much more. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it), the update also came with a little detail that wasn't supposed to be there. It turns out that the developer mode was also included for every player to access.

The developer mode in video games usually contains many tools useful for programmers to help them debug their work. One of these common features is the ability to freely swap between levels to easily test specific parts of the game without having to play everything from the beginning. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was no different in this aspect, and as such players were able to see all the missions available in the game.

Interestingly enough, there were a few levels in the list that weren't a part of the base game. Furthermore, they include the presence of a villain we have yet to see debut in Insomniac's franchise. While any attempt to access this new content was met with failed results, the curtain was finally lifted. It was revealed DLC is definitely coming our way. Now it's just a matter of figuring out when.

When can we expect an official reveal?

The closest gaming event on the horizon is Gamescom. It will take place from Aug 21 to August 25, and it will feature heavy hitter titles such as Marvel Rivals. So could Marvel's Spider-Man 2 make a surprise appearance there? Well, it's a little bit of a predicament. On one hand, we can't be far from an official announcement considering it's been almost a year since the base game was released, so it would seem likely. But on the other hand, PlayStation and Sony usually tend to save the biggest surprises for their own events.

If you're a PlayStation fan, then you know about the recurrent rumors of a showcase taking place almost every new week. However, one common theory is that a new showcase will finally be coming towards the end of the year. That's our biggest chance of getting an official reveal of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 DLC. Better yet; the expansion would most likely release soon after.

The first DLC chapter for Alan Wake 2, titled Night Springs, was released just one day after Remedy announced it during Summer Game Fest. So it wouldn't be too crazy to assume Insomniac Games could follow a similar tactic with its latest tile. And when that happens, we'll be sure to break it all down here in Whatever A Spider Can! So be sure to stick around for everything Spider-Man-related.
