Ever since its announcement, the upcoming Spider-Man Noir series has been (fittingly) surrounded by mystery. However, a few details about this case are finally coming to light. Back in July, Variety reported that Brendan Gleeson would join the upcoming Amazon series according to inside sources. Now, the news has been officially confirmed.

The Harry Potter star will play an undisclosed role believed to be that of the main antagonist. He'll join Nicholas Cage and Lamorne Morris in bringing to life the first modern Spider-Man live-action series since the Japanese TV adaptation released in 1978 (Yes, it's been a while). So, of course, we need to ask ourselves: What villain is Brendan playing on the small screen? Well, there are a few choices that could prove to be more than perfect for him.

Four antagonists Brendan Gleeson could play

Reliable insider Daniel Richtman reported back in July that Sandman - one of the wall-crawler's most iconic foes - will show up in Spider-Man Noir. At the moment, Flint Marko is the only villain we've heard about potentially being involved in the Amazon series. With that in mind, it would be fair to assume Brendan Gleeson could play the part (and we could definitely see the vision).

However, it's important to remember that Sandman didn't have a protagonistic role in the original Spider-Man Noir comic book series. Instead, he acted more as a follower of other powerful villains before finally meeting his demise - an arc that would most likely be adapted in the upcoming TV adaptation. Given that Brendan is rumored to be the show's main antagonist, then Sandman looks like an unlikely option for him to play (even if it could still be on the table). So let's turn our attention to other potential candidates.

Hammerhead and Tombstone are some of Spidey's most iconic villains that have yet to see a live-action adaptation. Furthermore, both of them would be a perfect fit for a Spider-Man Noir series since it will likely feature a grounded story focusing on New York's mob bosses and criminal empires. Besides, fans would be eager to see these two characters outside the realm of animation, video games, and comic books - which is an advantage over Sandman since he already appeared in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

However, if we're talking about a big bad perfect for the spotlight, then we need to acknowledge Spidey's archnemesis. You know, the same man who tortures our friendly neighborhood hero just for the sake of it. Norman Osborn had a prominent role in the Spider-Man Noir comic book series - going as far as being the mastermind behind the murder of Uncle Ben. He was the head of a criminal empire made up of carnival freaks, and even acted as the final antagonist in the Noir levels of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. The Goblin would serve as the perfect opposite of Nicholas Cage's Spider-Man, and Brendan Gleeson could definitely fit into the role. So fingers crossed that ends up being the case!
