5 Spider-Man spin-off games Insomniac should release
Even if DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may never see the light of day, the franchise is still far from over. Marvel's Spider-Man 3 is all but confirmed at this point, and it will most likely feature the return of Otto Octavius and the debut of the Green Goblin himself. However, there's plenty of room for other expansions as well. As Miles Morales proved, spin-offs centered around other Spider-Man characters can be a hit with players. With that in mind, it's time to look at what other games Insomniac could work on to take the saga even further.
5. Spider-Man: Noir
If you've collected all Spider-Bots in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, then you've seen the cut-scene that ties the game into the Spider-Verse animated movies. So now that the multiverse is open in Insomniac's saga, it would be the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on other arachnid heroes besides Peter and Miles. While there are countless options to choose from, perhaps the most ideal from a gameplay perspective would be Spider-Man Noir.
First and foremost; a title centered around him would be the only time when we could wield guns while playing as Peter Parker. However, he should have a very small amount of bullets available, and there should be a limit on how many criminals he can permanently put to sleep before there are consequences. The game could implement a morality system where Spider-Man's health and strength are greatly reduced the more bad guys you kill (due to the moral conflicts that result from his actions). Instead, the more non-lethal takedowns players perform, the more abilities they could have under their belt.
It isn't a secret the Mary Jane stealth missions in Marvel's Spider-Man franchise aren't the most beloved. However, they always felt like a secondary dish compared to the main Spider-Man quests. So it would be the perfect time for Insomniac to undergo a redemption arc and put all their efforts into creating great stealth mechanics for a Spider-Man Noir game.
4. Spider-Man online multiplayer
Speaking about the possibilities of the multiverse, we need to talk about Spider-Man: The Great Web. This canceled project would've been an online multiplayer experience in which different versions of Spider-Man teamed up to defeat the Sinister Six. Not only does the idea sound incredibly promising, but a leaked trailer also made us lose our collective minds.
Now, players are asking Insomniac and PlayStation to resume work on Spider-Man: the Great Web. On the bright side, it seems the game would've used the same engine, character models, and mechanics from previous Spider-Man titles. That would help speed up development and save some costs along the way.
It's not a secret that live-services projects seem to be a big risk nowadays with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord being dead almost from the get-go. However, Insomniac would be working with a bigger IP than any of those titles. Furthermore, they already created an engaging gameplay loop that would only get better if we could share it with friends. If seasonal content was also top-notch, then all the pieces needed to create a memorable experience would definitely be there.
3. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2
When Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released, it improved on everything its predecessor delivered. Animations were smoother, the world (specifically Harlem) was filled with more life, and loading times were greatly reduced. So even if the game was shorter than Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, it managed to be just as memorable. With that in mind, Miles' story needs to continue.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 did a good job of shining the spotlight on both of its arachnid heroes. However, it's hard to deny Peter's arc was a bit more compelling, with him having to deal with ghosts of his past thanks to Harry Osborn, coming to terms with the death of Aunt May, and battling his inner demons courtesy of the symbiote. Miles, on the other hand, had trouble writing a college essay... and that was pretty much it. Sure, it was interesting to watch him cross paths with the man that killed his father. But aside from that, his character didn't have too much development in Insomniac's latest title.
That could change for the better if Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2 were to be released. It would be nice for this hypothetical adventure to be as "big" in terms of scope as the mainline Marvel's Spider-Man games. Perhaps we could even watch Miles fight against Doctor Doom like in the Ultimate comic books? It certainly doesn't hurt to dream.
2. Silk
With the release of Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, players were introduced to a new version of Miles Morales. He started the story as a normal teenager, and by the end of the game he already had superpowers. Next thing we know, he's the star of his own stand-alone adventure. So in the same way, Cindy Moon should have a spin-off where she steals the spotlight.
Even if Silk's powers are very similar to those of Peter's, Insomniac could rely on the idea of her being much faster. Besides, they could also create more "acrobatic" animations for her, just like Miles has a much more "free-flowy" swinging style. Finally, we can't forget about her spider claws, which could add a whole new layer to the game's combat.
It seems Insomniac could be looking to bring to an end Peter's story and keep the saga going through other arachnid heroes. So now, more than ever, we need a Silk stand-alone adventure.
1. Venom
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 featured one single mission where players took control of Venom. But regardless of how little time that was, it was more than enough to make us wish for a stand-alone game centered around the Lethal Protector. After all, Cletus Kasady is currently on the loose with a symbiote of his own. Furthermore, there was also a lot of symbolism hinting at Knull's existence. Could that mean an adaptation of the Absolute Carnage storyline? Well, one thing's for certain: the possibilities are endless.
Venom may be technically a villain, but it isn't a secret he protects the innocent and defenseless as well. With that in mind, players would have the best of both worlds. We could wreak havoc across the city and permanently take down many villains that stand in our path such as Jack O'Lantern. However, we could also end up saving the day at the end of the game, giving us that heroic feeling of previous Marvel's Spider-Man games.
It's strange to think Insomniac developed and polished plenty of new gameplay mechanics for Venom to be used in only one mission. Maybe they have something else awaiting us in store, and we can't wait to see what that is.
