I usually try to build up suspense at the beginning of my reviews by not revealing from the get-go if the issue in question has been good or not. However, based on the title you can already tell: Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #28 is the perfect way to start 2025. This latest entry in Miles' story isn't just great—it's an absolutely fantastic tale that expands on the Spider-Man mythos and proves yet again that turning Miles into a vampire might have proven to be a perfect move. So let's dive into what exactly makes this issue so great.
The Gods have spoken
Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #28 tells two parallel stories: one which sees the wall-crawler and Black Panther attempt to find a cure for Miles' vampirism, while the other one shines the spotlight on Shift (Miles' clone) and Ganke. It's a perfect contrast between a high-stakes scenario and a touching and light-hearted tale. The former sees literal gods come at odds while the latter is more of a comic relief—and they both blend in perfectly well.
By the way, can I just say how great Shift is? He's the unsung hero of The Spectacular Spider-Men (2024) and getting to see him have a taste of a normal life was nothing short of heartwarming here. Furthermore, he also swung into action to save a baby from being run over by a car, which proved he's more than ready to cover for Miles when needed. While most "clone characters" prove to be controversial, to say the least, I can confidently say that I simply love Shift.
The dialog in Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #28 is pure perfection. Miles is a teenager from Brooklyn who just arrived in one of the most beautiful and technologically advanced countries in the Marvel Universe. He doesn't have a first clue about the country's traditions and culture. It's funny to see Black Panther and Shuri talk so formally and highly to their gods, while Miles is just there saying things like "Bro I didn't even know I was [claimed by a Spider-God]".
It is worth pointing out that Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #28 is the second part of the "Webs of Wakanda" storyline. If you read issues #27 and #28 back to back you'll be in for an absolutely iconic time. However, I do have to admit the former is a bit stronger when it comes to action and setting up Wakanda's mythology. But the two combined make a perfect tale that's worthy of being read by every Spidey fan across the world.
Daniele DI Nicuolo's art is as mesmerizing and unique as ever (even if it may prove to be a little too cartoony for some people's liking) while Cody Ziglar is making the most out of extended characters in the Marvel Universe. Bast's conflict with Anansi is not only entertaining to see unfold on this issue, but it also sets up the stage for what's shaping up to be an amazing follow-up—one where Miles' story can forever be changed if he's indeed cured of the Vampiric infection.
Verdict: A must-read for every Spidey fan
Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #28 is yet another fantastic entry in the franchise. It might not be as action-packed as its predecessor, but it features two parallel storylines that perfectly contrast with each other to bring in the high-stakes scenarios while also adding a bit of comic relief along the way. The dialog is nothing short of amazing, and Bast's conflict with Anansi sets up the stage for an even greater follow-up that could cure Miles' vampirism once and for all.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) #29 will be released on Jan. 15, 2025.
