Kraven the Hunter director reveals if the movie will connect to other projects

Sony's Spider-Man movies infamously lack any connection between them, so Kraven the Hunter director weighed in on whether his movie will be the exception.

Sony has released five movies so far as part of their Spider-Man Universe, yet none of those franchises have connected with each other. Audiences witnessed Morbius and Venom each share the screen with characters from a completely different universe on separate occasions — which was a much more complicated task than letting them cross paths with each other. That's why all expectations are on Kraven the Hunter to finally break the mold and feature a quick cameo of another Spider-Man-related character. At one point, it seemed like audiences would need to wait until the movie's release to figure out if it contains any big surprises, but director J. C. Chandor fortunately weighed in on the matter beforehand to keep our expectations in check.

Kraven the Hunter is an "isolated" movie

In an interview with ComicBook.com, director J.C. Chandor talked about the failures and successes of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. He knows fans haven't been exactly happy about many of the movies so far, while a few others have been a rare success. This mixed record might discourage some from watching Kraven the Hunter — which is completely understandable even amidst all the positive reactions so far. However, J. C. Chandor explains he's done everything to tell a "good damn" story, even if that means staying apart from what came before:

"I think (audiences) will realize that we’ve done everything we can to give them a pretty fun story. You’ll see when the movie’s over, there’s potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it, and just tell a good damn story. And then we’ll have opportunities to do a lot of fun things."

There was a time when Sony purposefully misled audiences into watching Morbius by adding Spider-Man easter eggs in the movie's promotional trailers, even if they didn't make their way into the final cut. With that in mind, it's nice to have a confirmation beforehand that Kraven the Hunter won't be part of an overarching story filled with cameos. Of course, that doesn't mean he can't eventually meet with other big characters such as Agent Venom (who's very likely to make his big-screen debut). However, a lot of it will depend on the movie's critical reception.

If I had to guess, I'd say there's little to no chance we'll see more of Morbius on the big screen since his movie bombed at the box office. Madame Web could maybe prove to be an exception, but that's just because of how easily her character can connect to other Spider-People across the multiverse (and even then I don't think Dakota Johnson would be eager to return to the role). So if Kraven wants any hope of securing a sequel or maybe even forming part of a crossover, his upcoming movie needs to do good.

Fortunately, all signs seem to indicate the streak of bad projects in Sony's Spider-Man Universe could be coming to an end. People who attended NYCC got to witness the movie's opening, and reactions were extremely positive. Everyone seems to agree this might be one of the most (if not THE most) violent Marvel films ever made. Some even compared it to John Wick due to the well-choreographed fight sequences and the fact that one man can take many goons down on his own. And even if we know Spider-Man or Venom won't make an appearance, Rhino, and Chameleon will — so at least other Marvel characters will be present. All things considered, it looks like we're in for a surprising experience.

Kraven the Hunter will be released on Dec. 13, 2024.
