Recently, it was announced Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds would be paired up for Variety's Actors on Actor — a show where big Hollywood stars have personal one-on-one conversations about their work and the industry as a whole. We've seen multiple iconic episodes across the years, but on December 9 we might get one of the best ones yet given that Andrew and Ryan's personalities match so well. Have we forgotten how they even kissed at the 2017 Golden Globes just for fun? Who can tell what else will happen during a 40-minute-long episode with the two of them front and center? Needless to say, it'll be a must-watch, so it shouldn't stop there.
There's another great place where Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds can steal the spotlight, and it's not another talk show (though that prospect would still be welcome). I'm talking about perhaps the biggest movie in cinema's history — one that could put Marvel back on the map after a shaky track record. Now that Avengers: Secret Wars is rapidly approaching, we need to start to think about which characters Spider-Man should team up with. While there are a great number of options, there's one that would be crowned as the absolute best.
Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man should team up with Deadpool in Secret Wars
Spidey and Deadpool are an amazing duo on comic book pages. They even had their own series which ran from 2016 to 2019 and consisted of 50 issues total. Most of them saw their titular characters face all sorts of whacky adventures including going to Savage Land and going on an action-packed road trip. Along the way, readers would debate who could be the most annoying (in a good way), and let me tell you: the competition was as fierce as it gets. They would constantly tease each other and even cross a few punches here and there. However, it was an unforgettable ride that should definitely be adapted to the big screen if given the opportunity.
Unfortunately, there's a big age gap between Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Ryan Reynolds Wade Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning their dynamic can't be the same as in comic book pages. While there's a way for them to still have an interesting relationship and arc on the big screen, I think The Merc With a Mouth should team up with another Peter Parker. After all, there are three of them! And who better to face the challenge than Andrew Garfield?
Andrew Garfield's version of the web-slinger is the one who likes to make the most quips and enjoys having superpowers. He would be more likely to one-up Deadpool himself with dumb jokes as opposed to Tobey or Tom's version of the character. Besides, Andrew's Peter and Wade Wilson could also bond over the fact that they lost their significant other in a horrible way (even if the latter reverted Vanessa's death by going back in time). Besides, they could definitely throw punches at each other if needed, and it would work because Deadpool wouldn't be attacking a young teenager. It's a match made in heaven!
Picture the two heroes fighting side by side against an army of Doombots on an intense and dark action sequence only for Deadpool to suddenly turn around out of nowhere, slap Spidey in the face, and yell: "and that's for kissing me in front of Blake!". The fouth-wall jokes could go forever, as the Merc With a Mouth could also mock this version of Peter for being the one with fewer stand-alone movies. However, Andrew's Spidey wouldn't be one to stay quiet either, as he'd return the insult in a matter of seconds. Wouldn't it be incredibly entertaining to watch their back-and-forth? Well, on the bright side, this crossover could actually become a thing.
Prolific superhero insider Alex Perez teased that Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds could one day meet on the big screen. While no additional details were revealed, it's safe to assume that interaction could happen in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will act as the definite conclusion of the MCU's Multiverse Phase. It would be the last chance ever to see those two characters share the screen, and that's an opportunity that shouldn't go to waste. After all, it seems like Andrew's days as the wall-crawler numbered with reports stating The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will never come to be. So fingers crossed Marvel realized they have the chance to do something iconic by pairing him with the world's most beloved mercenary.
