It's impossible to forget the day in which those Spider-Man: No Way Home set pictures leaked before the movie's release. You know, the ones that gave us our first look at Andrew Garfield wearing the iconic red and blue costume after a nine-year hiatus. We were all shocked, excited, and perhaps a bit emotional. It all seemed a bit too good to be true and unfortunately, reality struck soon afterward. Andrew Garfield would go on to appear on multiple shows and interviews only to confirm those pictures were Photoshopped and that he wasn't going to make a surprise appearance in No Way Home. It was all just one big lie.
Except we all know that just was just his attempt to preserve the big surprise.
Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker swung higher than ever and even underwent a bit of a real-life redemption arc in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While he was once behind the most divisive rendition of the character in the public eye, there are now campaigns for his stand-alone trilogy to be completed. We simply can't get enough of him as the friendly neighborhood hero, so we're eager to learn if and when he'll show up next. With so many rumors flying around it's impossible to know what to believe, so what better way to put all suspicions to rest than to ask the man himself? Well, there's only one problem: The answer might be rather disappointing.
Andrew Garfield says he hasn't signed up for Spider-Man 4
Andrew Garfield had a very emotive interview with GQ, in which he discussed grief and how it's important to talk about loss. The British star lost his mother, Lynn Garfield, to pancreatic cancer back in 2019. Now, he's the star behind a movie titled We Live in Time where his character falls in love with that of Florence Pugh's who has cancer as well. It might hit a bit too close to home, and even Andrew recognizes how important it is for him to get "back to the pure joy of the work rather than having it tied to career in any way".
As was to be expected, the Spider-Man discussion came up at one point in the interview. But when asked if he has signed up for the wall-crawler's upcoming MCU movie yet, this is what Andrew Garfield had to say:
"I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on"
This statement comes after multiple reports indicating that the untitled Spider-Man 4 will be a huge crossover movie involving big characters such as Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker, and, of course, Andrew Garfield as another variant of the web-slinger. This would be made in an attempt to capture the same magic that made Deadpool & Wolverine such a beloved superhero epic last year. So, of course, the question has to be asked: Who's telling the truth?
Well, this might be reading a bit too much into things but perhaps Andrew Garfield is saying the truth and he hasn't signed onto Spider-Man 4.... yet. After all, the movie hasn't even begun shooting and there has been no shortage of rumors claiming it will even be delayed to ensure the script is the best it can be. At the moment, Sony and Marvel's official position is that production will begin in the summer of this year. So if a delay is really on the cards an announcement would need to be made soon.
On the other hand, it's very likely that Andrew is trying to misdirect us yet again. After all, Marvel actors are sometimes legally forbidden from talking about certain aspects of their upcoming projects or even confirming if they'll show up once more. Besides, it would be a bit too out of place for the British star to confirm his involvement in the movie at a point when shooting hasn't even started and audiences don't have an official idea of what kind of story will be brought to life on the big screen.
But what if Andrew Garfield is actually telling the truth and he won't, by any means, show up in Spider-Man 4? Well, let's just remember that Avengers: Secret Wars is around the corner and it would be quite a shocker if his rendition of Spider-Man wasn't there fighting alongside other iconic Marvel characters such as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. After all, that's the only way the MCU can surpass the bar set with Avengers: Endgame. There's no better way for the Multiverse Saga to end than with an epic crossover between heroes of multiple realities, and you just know Andrew's Peter Parker has to be there.
If Spider-Man 4 ends up releasing next year, it won't be long before the official synopsis and set photos give us an idea of what will be in store and whether Andrew is likely to appear or not. So at least we won't have to wait too long for some much-needed answers.
Spider-Man 4 will be released on Jul. 24, 2026.
