Spider-Man is such a beloved and popular character, that we've seen three different live-action versions of him on the big screen. Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire have all taken on the role, each with their own set of strengths and iconic moments. As a result, fans often have a favorite among the three - one they look up to the most and who swings just a little higher than the rest. So it isn't surprising that Andrew, who's a massive fan of the wall-crawler, also has his own pick as well.
Tobey Maguire is Andrew Garfeild's favorite Spider-Man
While promoting their upcoming film We Live in Time, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh tested how well they know each other in a Vanity Fair Game Show. The video (which you can watch above) features both Marvel stars asking personal questions and trying to give each other the right answers. At one point, Florence had to guess Andrew's favorite actor to portray Spider-Man. After she tried to say an amalgamation of "Tobey" and "Tom", the British actor finally gave a conclusive answer:
"Tobey was my guy. I was in drama school and I was watching his films when I was a young impressionable actor and I was practicing being him. But (...) I think what Tom has done is incredible as well. Like, I kind of love them both equally. But I think (...) it was like a formative part of my life, Tobey is (...) my Spider-Man."Andrew Garfield
Spider-Man has been an incredibly popular hero since his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 back in 1962. However, there's no denying Tobey Maguire reinvented the character in 2002 with the first-ever live-action Spider-Man film. When many of us think about the iconic hero, Tobey is the one that comes to mind due to the significant importance of his trilogy. Without it, perhaps the Marvel Cinematic Universe wouldn't exist as we know it today. He, Wesley Snipes, and Hugh Jackman are the faces behind the franchises that forever changed the superhero landscape.
There's no denying every single iteration of Peter Parker has its own unique and special thing. Tobey nailed the shy and awkward side of the character, while simultaneously being the one with the worst "Parker luck". Andrew interpreted an amazing Spider-Man who joked around while fighting bad guys and enjoyed having superpowers, going as far as doing jaw-dropping tricks mid-air while swinging between skyscrapers. Tom is the best of both worlds, juggling between the optimistic teenager who just joined a greater superhero world while saving the day more times than we can count.
We all grew up watching a different version of the friendly neighborhood hero on the big screen. In the case of Andrew, that was Tobey, so, understandably, he's the one that comes to mind when thinking about Spider-Man. However, the respect and admiration for Tom is also very heartwarming to see. And there's no denying it; if Spider-Man: No Way Home proved anything, is that we're all eager to see more from the three arachnid heroes in the future (which might not be too far away).
Rumor has it that both Tobey and Andrew could be back in the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4 and the multiversal crossover Avengers: Secret Wars. While nothing is set in stone yet (and it's best to take all rumors with a grain of salt), the idea alone is very exciting. That way, no matter what variant of Peter Parker you prefer, you'd be guaranteed to see more of him. Hopefully, Sony and Marvel manage to catch lightning in a bottle one more time.
