The release of Marvel Rivals is upon us. In just a matter of a few days (at the time of writing this), everyone will get to see what developer NetEase has been crafting for quite some time now. The PvP shooter set in the Marvel Universe has been gathering positive reactions throughout the alpha and beta tests โ and players can't wait to find out if the full experience lives up to the excitement or not. So In anticipation of the big day, it's time to look at what Spider-Man costumes are confirmed to make an appearance. However, it's worth keeping in mind this is a list of all the reveals we know about before the game's release, and more will surely come afterward. Now that we got that out of the way, we're ready to go!
MCU's Iron Spider
Is there a single place where we haven't seen the MCU's Iron Spider suit? Since it made its cinematic debut near the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming it has appeared everywhere. Peter got to wear it in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. As if that wasn't enough, the suit also made an appearance in the now-defunct Marvel's Avengers video game, as well as in Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4 and its sequel. So of course it had to be in Marvel Rivals too in order to keep the streak going.
It's a faithful adaptation that translates really well into Marvel Rivals' comic-book-esque visual style. The only feature missing at first glance is the robotic claws, but it wouldn't be surprising to learn they could appear with the use of a special ability just as it was in Marvel's Spider-Man. On a personal note, this is the costume I'll be using the least (and perhaps it could prove to be the least beloved in general) just because of how much we've seen it already throughout different mediums. Besides, other cool-looking skins could prove to be much more worth it, such as...
Spider-Punk 2099
Now we're talking. The original Spider-Man 2099 suit is made up of a very distinctive and striking design that sets itself apart from many other fits the wall-crawler has ever sported. On the same page, the Spider-Punk design shines for all the right reasons, as it presents a more rebellious look for someone who usually is considered a friendly neighborhood hero. But who would've thought the mix of a futuristic aesthetic with the iconic features of a rockstar would result in a match made in heaven? Seriously, props to NetEase for the design behind this costume.
The Spider-Punk 2099 looks absolutely beautiful in action. There's a 10-minute gameplay video (that you can watch here) highlighting the costume, and let me tell you, this one is a must. During the closed beta, it could be unlocked by playing Galacta's Quest which was a battle-pass-like event. It's unclear if there will be a similar mechanic required to obtain it once the full game releases, but fingers crossed this one isn't locked behind a paywall (though, the most likely chance is it will).
Bombastic Bag-Man
Have you ever found yourself in a situation when you need to jump into action and save the day but you don't have your super suit with you? Well, worry not since all that's needed is a paper bag and your identity will be safe. Proof of that is the Bombastic Bag-Man suit in Marvel Rivals. After all, it consists of Peter in his civilian attire with a makeshift mask; it's that simple, and yet the results are nothing short of amazing.
There's a cool easter-egg in this costume courtesy of the backpack plushy. If you look closely, you'll see it represents the Bombastic Bag-Man design from comic book pages. The biggest difference is the original look was made with a spare Fantastic Four suit since Peter had nothing else to wear โ an element that's not present here. However, it's nice to see NetEase is taking some creative liberties with the skins for their game. While the results may not be everyone's cup of tea, you won't find them in any other her project across any other medium. Besides, I do think this iteration of the Bombastic Bag-Man suit has a great spin of its own while maintaining the most iconic element of its comic book counterpart. So it's not a bad way to go at all.
Marvel Rivals default Spider-Man suit
Any project featuring a new iteration of Spider-Man needs to have a unique, original suit design. Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4 found the simplest and yet most effective solution to this problem was shaking things up a bit and adding a white spider logo. The Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to go back to basics and create a costume faithful to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's era of the character. So on that same page, Marvel Rivals created a look that's "busy" and has many elements on the front while being mostly empty on the back.
Fans have had mixed to negative reactions to this suit. So much so in fact, that NetEase has been slightly modifying the design to remove some "controversial" fashion choices (such as a strange "webbing" pattern on the boots). But even then, I can't help but think this one is a bit too overly designed for its own good. On the bright side, it can always be changed if you don't like it. And in the case you do, then it couldn't be more perfect considering this is the free skin Spidey comes with in the base game.
Scarlet Spider (PS5 excluive)
Can we all agree the suit Kaine wore when he became the Scarlet Spider on comic book pages is nothing but perfection? It's an iconic design that lets you know instantly something is off about this version of the wall-crawler. However, that classic look was redesigned for Marvel Rivals and, I have to say, I prefer the original all the way. The costume looks like it was MCUified, just like it happened to the Iron Spider armor.
However, the color palette remains consistent with Kaine's version of the Scarlet Spider, and the best part is that this one is a freebie. On the downside, it's exclusive just to those playing on a PlayStation 5 console. But if you're one of the lucky ones playing in Sony's console, then that's it! You're ready to take on your opponents with this intimidating design on release day. And, hey, maybe it looks even better in action than in the concept art presented above.
Marvel Rivals will be released on Dec. 6, 2024, on all major platforms.
