Which Spider-Verse Spideys should get an ongoing series?

facebooktwitterreddit

Back when Edge of Spider-Verse was still happening we petitioned our readers (you lovely folks) on whether or not they wanted an ongoing series for Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Gwen, the consensus was a conclusive yes.

I then theorised that the Spider-Verse could be used as a good launching pad for new solo Spidey titles. In fact, we’ve already seen the magic of the Spider-Verse work on Edge of Spider-Verse #2’s Spider-Gwen as the overwhelmingly positive reaction to her character caused Marvel to jump to action and commission an ongoing series for her.

But which other Spideys should get their own ongoing?

Spider-Man Noir

He was the first Spider-Man (other than Peter Parquargh) to appear in the Spider-Verse storyline kicking off Edge of Spider-Verse. His issue was met with almost as positive a reaction as Spider-Gwen’s was and the character already has quite the fan-base.

I’d really love to see Noir get his own ongoing following the Spider-Verse and it’s definitely possible as the character is currently out of action following an injury he received at the hands of an inheritor.

The story writes itself – Noir’s return to action following the devastating results of the Spider-Verse as he could only sit and watch whilst most of the other Spideys perished. Make it happen Marvel!

Spider-Punk

People seem to really, really like Spider-Punk with the internet constantly declaring him its new favourite Spider-Man.

Personally I think he’s just filling the bad-ass hole that was left by the untimely death of Assassin Spider-Man, who was killed off far too quickly but if people like him so be it!

He received a bit of the spotlight in Spider-Verse #2 where it was revealed he was definitely Hobie Brown leaving in a world of Venom symbiote businessmen. It was pretty good and I want to see more!

Supaidaman (Toei Spider-Man)

Yes, I recently wrote an article stating I didn’t want to see a Supaidaman ongoing because I don’t think they’d do it justice.

I still believe this but if the support is there and Marvel do go ahead with an ongoing then it’ll probably one of the most fun comic books around.

I mean what’s not to love about a Spider-Man who does Motocross, has a Spidey-Mobile and a Robot Megazord called Leopardon?

Spider-Girl (Mayday Parker)

When Mayday Parker was announced as part of the Spider-Verse and shown in Amazing Spider-Man #8 it was clear to see that after a successful solo run in the past there were still tons of people that held her character in high regard.

Despite the popularity she’s been a bit disappointing in the Spider-Verse so far having been given a reductive ‘revenge’ storyline that, to many people, is completely out of character for her. And she hasn’t really done that much.

However she’s still a much-loved character and would probably continuously sell an ongoing if she was the star, especially if Tom Defalco has anything to do with it. Basically Mayday Parker still has a lot to give and has a lot of unexplored narrative as a character!

Scarlet Spider (Kaine)

After spending some time with the New Warriors as part of an ongoing ‘team’ series I think it’s time for Kaine to get his own series again.

This slightly darker Spidey can fill in the void left by Superior Spider-Man and truly excel. He’s been a major part of the Spider-Verse storyline, and like Spider-Girl he’s an incredibly popular, already established character that doesn’t post much of a risk!

To cut a long story short; Kane is incredibly bad-ass and is just too awesome to not have his own ongoing series going forward.

I think that’s it for me, there are several Spideys out there like Spider-UK, Mangaverse Spider-Man, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man India, Lady Spider, Spider-Girl (Ashley Barton), SP/dr etc etc. but none of them have really stood out as deserving more focus and attention.
