A look at Spider-Man comics without Spider-Man in

In honour of the recent Superior Spider-Man series that saw Doctor Octopus take up the mantle of Spider-Man after taking over Peter Parker’s body, and the Superior Foes of Spider-Man series which doesn’t even feature Spider-Man at all Comicsalliance have looked at some other Spider-Man comics that dont actually feature the titular wall-crawler in them at all. It’s a really good article and it gives you some interesting comics to read so I’d advise you all to check it out here

They found the comics using the Marvel Unlimited App which is basically a giant store of Marvel comics that you can peruse at your own leisure, providing you’ve paid for, subscribed and downloaded the App. Eisner award-winning critic Douglas Wolk compiles a weekly article of Marvel Unlimited Edition where he finds rare or interesting comics amongst the 13,000 or so available. The article lists three comic issues that bare the Spider-Man title, but don’t actually include the Web Head himself.

The first being Spider-Man’s Tangled Web #4 (2001) which features a one-off story focussing on a henchman of Kingpin who was foiled by Spider-Man. The guy who planned the job is called in to see Kingpin which usually means one thing, hence the title of the story ‘Severance Package’. It’s a neat little reminder of the consequences of Spidey’s actions.

The second issue is Untold Tales of Spider-Man #-1 (1997) which focusses less on Peter Parker and more on his parents in the aptly named ‘Richard and Mary Parker: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’. We’ve seen a heavy focus on the Parker parents back-story in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man film franchise and this comic serves as a precursor of that. Richard and Mary are working for ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’ and they encounter Baron Strucker and Agent Ten (Wolverine).

The final issue is Secret Invasion: Spider-Man – Brand New Day #1-3 (2008). Well I say issue, this is more of a miniseries focussing on the shapeshifting alien attack of earth that was a big cross-over storyline back in the day. This particular minseries was more of a Jackpot miniseries rather than a Spider-Man one, only showing Spidey in a pair of recap pages.

As I said, do check out the article here, it comes complete with pictures and all sorts! Also check out comicsalliance in general, not only do they have the great weekly Marvel Unlimited Edition feature, but they have tons of other cool stuff to read as well!
