Dane DeHaan has rose to fame with several critically acclaimed films, none of which were massive Blockbusters. There was Sci-Fi superhero flick ‘Chronicle’, then he starred alongside Ryan Gosling in ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ and finally he appeared in ‘Kill Your Darlings’.
Naturally this is an impressive run of films from a young actor that is already being compared to Oscar-less great (sorry I had to fit that in) Leonardo Dicaprio. But it may surprise some to learn that a young actor with the CV that DeHaan has wasn’t offered the role of Harry Osborn in Amazing Spider-Man 2, in fact he wasn’t even considered. He had to audition for the role and convince people that he was the right man for the job of playing long-lost friend Harry Osborn, come sinister Spider-Man villain Green Goblin.
“There was honestly no hesitancy, I wanted to do this so bad. I actually fought really hard to be a part of it. … I had to audition for it, but just getting the audition for it was hard. I think they had a different idea at first of the kind of Harry Osborn they wanted, and I had to fight hard to get in the door and be like, ‘No, look, this is my take on Harry. This is my take on the modern-day Harry.’
He goes on to say in an interview with nola.com
“All in all, it was probably like two months of auditions and waiting and tests. It was a battle to be a part of it. But in the end it was so worth it, and I’m so excited for everything.”
Personally I think it’s great that Sony didn’t hand pick their actors and ultimately after seeing Amazing Spider-Man 2 I can confirm that their casting decisions, not just with Green Goblin, as DeHaan is superb in the role, but throughout the whole franchise have been top notch.
