Shailene Woodley in ‘Divergent’

A lot of you will know, some of you might not, but Shailene Woodley was supposed to be in Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane in what was expected to be a small role that would escalate as the franchise continues (and presumably Gwen Stacey is no longer in the picture). However Webb dropped Woodley’s parts in Amazing Spider-Man 2 altogether to stream-line the film and to keep the focus purely on Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey.

Naturally most people assumed that Woodley’s part would be pushed forward to Amazing Spider-Man 3 which is when we’ll be seeing more of Peter Parker’s perhaps more famous love interest (particularly in part to Kirsten Dunst’s performance as her in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy). However now there seems to be doubts that even that will happen.

Woodley is currently helming another franchise in ‘Divergent’ which due to a decent box office haul and been greenlit for two more movies. This has lead to Woodley’s future in the Spider-Man franchise being put into question, with the actress herself not really sure what’s going on.

Shailene spoke to Total Film recently and claimed to have “no idea” whether she’d be in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and admitted that her heart might not be in it anyway. “I don’t even know that I would want to do two franchises at this point,”

This coupled with the rumours that Woodley’s role has been cut completely and instead the role of Mary Jane will be recast if and when the character is needed seem to indicate that we won’t ever get to see the scenes Woodley shot. For now at least it seems as if the ‘Divergent’ actress really is done with the world of Spider-Man
