Mark Webb will not direct Amazing Spider-Man 4

Marc Webb is responsible for Sony’s Spider-Man reboot and did a pretty good job with Amazing Spider-Man featuring the Lizard as the main villain. His second film Amazing Spider-Man 2 is creating a lot of buzz and certainly has me excited and the third film promises many many more Spider-Man goodies.

However that’s sadly where it might all end. Webb conducted an interview with the Daily Beast where he discussed the Amazing Spider-Man 2 and also how he went from directing 500 Days of Summer to being in charge of one of the biggest superhero franchises in the world.

It’s all really interesting stuff, check out the interview at The Daily Beast here. However I want to focus on this question “And you’re signed on to direct the third Amazing Spider-Man as well. Will that be it for you?” This is important because many people, myself included, feel that Webb is doing a great job at providing us with the world of Spider-Man and it would be particularly bad news to hear that he won’t be carrying it forwad.

But that’s exactly what it seems will be happening with Webb’s reply

"“I’d like to be involved as a consultant, and I’ve already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I’ve had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it’ll be the time to find something else.”"

So it looks like Webb will just be directing the opening trilogy in Sony’s new Spider-Man universe and will no-longer be helming the franchise as a director after that. Hopefully he does, as he says, stay on as a consultant as I feel it’s important that his overall vision, which he is obviously building towards, gets followed through with.

This news also makes me more convinced that Webb will want to close out his tenure with a bang and do something fairly controversial like maybe kill off Peter Parker, or at least kill off another main character. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself but I do feel that Spider-Man presents the opportunity for story-lines we’ve yet to see in comic-book superhero movies to happen.

So with Webb not doing Amazing Spider-Man 4 or beyond, who do we want to direct Spider-Man going forward?
