BJ Novak to play yet ANOTHER villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to be Spider-Man’s toughest on-screen challenge yet. Not only does he have his hands full with the films predominant villain Electro, who will be played by Jamie Foxx. But he also has to juggle Paul Giamatti’s Rhino and Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin as well.

That’s not even mentioning the fact that Dane DeHaan’s on-screen father Norman Osborn is also around and we know that in the comic books he too becomes the Green Goblin. Then there’s Felicity Jones who is said to have a ‘special’ relationship with Norman Osborn and also has a costume (speculation suggests she’s the Black Cat) and finally Colm Feore’s character Donald Menken (also connected to Norman Osborn) looks like a very stong Vulture possibility.

So as you can see Spidey looks set to take on twice as many villains as Toby Macguire’s character faced in ‘Spider-Man 3’, and people said that film had too much going on! But wait, there’s more! The Office star BJ Novak had previously been cast in an unspecified role. His character was slyly announced by director Mark Webb earlier, and you’ve guessed it, he’s playing yet another villain.

So who is A. Smythe? Or Alistair Smythe? Well, Alistair Smythe is otherwise known as ‘Ultimate Spider Slayer’ is an elusive villain of Spider-Man’s. Smythe inherited his father’s robots dubbed ‘Spider Slayers’ when his father died trying to kill Spider-Man. Alistair then continued his father’s work on the Spider Slayers after developing a new-found hatred of the Webslinger. Eventually Smythe encased himself in a bio-organic exoskeleton in order to attempt to bring Spidey down.

Novak himself has been quick to disregard his appearance in Amazing Spider-Man 2 as ‘not pivotal’ however, he could me making a cameo here to set up a bigger role in the future. I’d certainly like to see a Spider-Man film where Spidey has to go up against Smythe and his Spider Slayers. But who knows!
